Sie spielte teuflisch gut Klavier, sie sang göttlich und sah aus wie ein Engel: Sie war ein Star. Und zusammen mit ihrem Mann, dem ersten farbigen Kongressabgeordneten Adam Clayton Powell junior, waren sie „Brangelina“ der 1940er-Jahre – das Glamourpaar des Swing.
Aber Scott wurde dreifach diskriminiert: Als Afroamerikanerin, als Frau und vom „Komitee für unamerikanische Umtriebe“. Billie Holiday war ihre große Schwester, Art Tatum ihr „Pappa Daddy“.
Mutige Karriere
Im Alter von acht Jahren war Hazel Scott Privatstudentin an der Julliard School, mit 15 spielte sie das Count Basie Orchestra an die Wand – und zwar alleine! Mit 19 Jahren hatte sie die erste Radio-, mit 30 die erste Fernsehshow einer Afroamerikanerin, einen mächtigen Hollywoodboss in die Knie gezwungen und das Komitee öffentlich bloßgestellt. Mit 40 war sie fertig – und hat bitter für ihren Mut bezahlt. Henry Altmann über eine außergewöhnliche Frau und Musikerin.
