Nachdem Ruth Lee Jones den Künstlernamen Dinah Washington (1924 – 1962) angenommen hatte, ging es mit ihrer Karriere steil nach oben. Mit ihrem variablen Vokal-Stil sorgte sie schon bei ihrem ersten Job in den 1940er-Jahren im Lionel Hampton Orchester für Aufsehen. Dabei engte die Bezeichnung „Queen Of The Blues“ ihr Talent nur ein. Für Dinah Washington gab es kein musikalisches Genre, das sie nicht überzeugend interpretieren konnte. Von Gerd Filtgen
