Doku: „The Breath Courses Through Us“ (2013) Über die Geschichte des „New York Art Quartets“ !!!
This is a documentary film about a pioneering jazz group from the early 1960’s, the New York Art Quartet. They were part of a genre of jazz that was sometimes called „free jazz.“ They were only together from 1964-65, but their ideas about composition, improvisation, timing, harmony and rhythm affected the future of jazz music.
The group consisted of John Tchicai (saxophone), Roswell Rudd (trombone), Milford Graves (drums), Reggie Workman (bass), and joined by poet Amiri Baraka.
Some 35 years later, they reunited for a concert in New York City, followed by two more appearances in Paris and Lisbon.
The Breath Courses Through Us centers around the initial reunion concert and dinner, and includes interviews with the musicians, and other musicians, recounting their history, early development, ideas, memories, and especially their personalities. The viewer gets up and personal in sometimes intimate moments among them.
This film is edited in an unfolding, lyrical manner, enveloped in their music, and at the end, the viewer becomes friends with the musicians, and wants to learn more.

„Ken Burn’s Doku über den Jazz hatte schon viel Schönes – aber „Free Jazz“ fand dort so gut wie gar nicht statt. Nun kann die Lücke wenigstens teilweise gefüllt werden: Alan Roth’s gut einstündiger Film beleuchtet dieses wichtige Genre. Interviews mit u.a. Marion Brown, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, mit musikalischen Kurzbeiträgen von Künstlern wie Sun Ra, Joseph Jarman bis Peter Brötzmann. Alan Roth’s Arbeiten als Regisseur umfassen Videos und Dokumentationen zu den Themen „Menschenrechte“ bis „Aids“…“
Super ! Noch ein Film den ich mir anschauen muss …. Nur wann ?
Für diese beiden Filme werde ich mir auf jeden Fall Zeit nehmen, das sind wahre Schmuckstücke!! Es gibt nicht viele Interviews mit der ersten Free Jazz Generation, dazu waren sie zu obskur. Das sind sehr liebevoll gemachte Dokus mit viel Herzblut… [schwärm] 🙂
Ja dessen bin ich mir bewusst! Ich denke das ich es in den nächsten Tagen auf jeden Fall schaffe. Viele aus dieser Zeit sind ja nicht mehr unter uns …. Ich bin auf jeden Fall sehr gespannt.
