Zawinul begleitete die Sängerin Dinah Washington, arbeitete mit Cannonball Adderley (für den er sich „Mercy, Mercy, Mercy“ ausdachte) und Miles Davis (er ist Autor des Stücks „In A Silent Way“) Geschichte schrieb er, mit der von ihm und Wayne Shorter gegründeten Band „Weather Report“.
Den typischen Sound dieser Formation setzte er später mit seinem „Zawinul Syndicate“ fort. Darüber hinaus komponierte er auch sinfonische Werke wie „Stories of the Danube“
