1910 geboren, kooperierte sie mit Andy Kirk, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington und Dizzy Gillespie und spielte sogar ein Duo mit Cecil Taylor: Kaum ein Musiker*in kann eine vergleichbare Bandbreite an Stilen für sich beanspruchen. Sie gehörte zu den Ersten, die eine eigene Plattenfirma gründeten. Ihr Leben lang sozial engagiert, war Mary Lou Williams zudem eine Wegbereiterin der Gleichberechtigung von Frauen im Jazz.
