Mit „Transylvanian Folk Songs” unternimmt der gebürtige Rumäne eine eigene Interpretation der originären „Bauernmusik”-Sammlung Béla Bartóks. Vor fast zwei Jahrzehnten übersiedelte Lucian Ban nach New York. Seitdem arbeitet der Pianist eng mit dem Bratschisten Mat Maneri zusammen. Der britische Holzbläser John Surman ergänzt ihre Partnerschaft zu einem faszinierenden Trio. In Béla Bartóks Geburtsstadt Sannicolau Mare, unweit der ungarischen Grenze, kamen Ban, Maneri und Surman 2018 auf Einladung der lokalen Bartók-Gesellschaft zu einem mehrtägigen Gastspiel zusammen. Mit „Transylvanian Folk Songs” stellten sie dort erstmals ein Programm vor, das der originären „Bauernmusik”-Sammlung Bartóks gewidmet ist. Dessen Feldaufnahmen dienten den dreien als Grundlage für abenteuerliche Improvisationen.
