Die kleinste mögliche Ensembleform im Jazz ist das Duo. Doch je kleiner die Formation, desto höher das Risiko und die Aufgabenlast. Beide Spieler müssen alles liefern, was sonst Kollegen in einer Band übernehmen: Rhythmus, Groove, Harmonien, Melodielinien, und dazwischen auch noch ein musikalisches Gespräch entwickeln, mit Dynamiken, mit Höhen und Tiefen.

Ausruhen oder zurückziehen kann sich keiner. Eigentlich eine brutale Herausforderung. Erst recht für die Kombination Schlagzeug und Saxophon. Der finnische Saxophonist Timo Lassy und sein Kollege, der Schlagzeuger Teppo Mäkynen haben sich auf ein solches Wagnis eingelassen. „Timo Lassy & Teppo Mäkynen“ heißt ihr gemeinsames neues Album. Und siehe da, sie stoßen auf diesem schmalen Pfad auf die große Freiheit, befeuern, unterstützen, unterhalten sich. Ebenso leicht wie intensiv. Ein Blick in die Jazzgeschichte offenbart: Auch andere haben sich in diesem Format. Max Roach und Randy Weston, Milford Graves und David Murray oder vor kurzem die beiden Briten Binker & Moses. Das Duo als Wagnis der Freiheit.
