Entertainer par excellence – Dizzy Gillespie
Bebop wäre ohne ihn nicht denkbar. Und er fusionierte afro-kubanischer Musik mit Jazz. Dizzy Gillespie stand für „serious fun“: ein ernsthafter Musiker, der stets zu Späßen aufgelegt war.
Ein ernst gemeinter Spaß war auch die Kampagne „Dizzy for President!“ – Gillespies Idee, sich 1964 als demokratischen Kandidaten aufstellen zu lassen. Er war überzeugt davon, dass „jeder einen besseren Präsidenten abgibt als der gerade amtierende“. Gillespies wichtigster Slogan aber war zugleich sein Lebensmotto – und eine süffisante Anspielung an Shakespeare: „To be or not not to bop!“
