Little Giant – Johnny Griffin (Extended Version)

Klein von Gestalt, aber mit mächtigem Ton. Sein Spitzname: „Little Giant“. Der amerikanische Tenorsaxophonist Johnny Griffin war ein lebensfrohes Energiebündel und Inbegriff des swingenden Hardbop.

Mit siebzehn macht er seine erste Aufnahme mit Lionel Hampton, es folgen Engagements u.a. bei Art Blakey. Populär wird er als Teil der „Tough Tenors“, die den friedlichen Wettstreit kultivieren. Der „Little Giant“ lässt sich in Paris nieder, macht oft Station in Köln. Später entdeckt er in Frankreich ein Schloss aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Hier wird Griffin bis zu seinem Lebensende residieren.
