Happy Family first appeared in the early 1990s as part of the explosion of exciting, underground bands that came roaring out of Japan at that time, such as Ruins, Bondage Fruit, Tipographica and Boredoms.

We heard their demo [sent to us on a cassette, of course], we were blown away and we signed them! In those early 90s pre-internet days, somehow word still got out about this exciting band from Japan who were going to be releasing their debut with us! It was the first time that I had seen this sort of excitement building for a band who had never released anything before; it was a very fun thing to experience!
