Mit Swing, Charme und Melone – Fats Waller (Extended Version

Als Pianist und Sänger wurde Thomas „Fats“ Waller eine prägende Figur des frühen Jazz der 1920er Jahre hin zum Swing. Ihm zu verdanken sind Evergreens wie „Ain’t Misbehavin‘“ oder „Honeysuckle Rose“.

1904 geboren, spielt Thomas Waller zunächst Harmonium, dann Klavier und Orgel. Heimlich swingt er in der Kirche – und prägt später das Stride-Piano: virtuose Soli, kräftige Bassfiguren, typische Oktavsprüngen. Als ständig essender und trinkender „Fats“ begeistert er mit Humor und Charme, wird zur Jazz-Legende. Doch sein maßloser Lebensstil endet tragisch: 1943 stirbt er mit nur 39 Jahren.
